With the improvement of global environmental awareness and the tightening of regulatory policies, sustainable development has become the core development trend of the glass cosmetic packaging industry. Recently, domestic and foreign enterprises have launched various environmental innovation schemes, and concepts such as PCR glass application, lightweight design and refillable design have been gradually implemented, promoting the industry’s transformation towards a circular economy.
PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) glass has become an important breakthrough in the industry’s green transformation. It is reported that SGD Pharma’s Zhanjiang, China factory has realized mass production of glass bottles with 20% and 30% PCR content, and has become the first glass manufacturer in China to obtain ISO 14021 certification for PCR glass packaging. Its products are processed from recycled consumer waste glass, which can effectively reduce the use of raw materials and energy consumption. Domestic leading enterprises have also followed up. Fuyang Instrument plans to realize mass production of glass bottles with 30% recycled material ratio in 2026, and simultaneously support photovoltaic roofs and waste heat recovery systems to further reduce carbon emissions.
Lightweight design has achieved dual improvement in environmental protection and practicality. Through wall thickness optimization and bottom stress distribution reconstruction, the wall thickness of mainstream bottle bodies has been reduced from 1.8mm to 1.3mm, and the average weight of 200mL perfume bottles has been reduced by 23%. On the premise of ensuring that the drop strength meets the standard, it significantly reduces the logistics carbon footprint. International high-end brands have also actively practiced the lightweight concept. Chanel No. 1 Camellia Series adopts lightweight glass packaging, canceling cellophane and paper manuals to further reduce packaging waste.
In addition, refillable design has become an important measure for brands to practice circular economy. The ECLIPSE refillable glass jar launched by SGD Pharma adopts a modular design, allowing consumers to easily replace the inner core and extend the service life of the outer glass container; international brands such as Chanel and Coty have also launched replaceable refill products to reduce disposable packaging waste. Data show that the annual growth rate of global reusable cosmetic packaging reaches 28%, among which glass, with its excellent recyclability and durability, has become the preferred material for refillable packaging.
Industry insiders said that with the further implementation of international environmental regulations such as PPWR in the future, recycled material content and carbon footprint will become important indicators for industry access, and enterprises mastering PCR glass production technology and lightweight processes will gain more market opportunities.
