org Successfully Commissions Second Furnace at Vetri Speciali’s Italian Plant
The furnace commissioned by Sorg for Vetri Speciali is designed to produce flint, amber, green, and dark green glass containers.
Sorg GmbH & Co. KG has successfully commissioned a second furnace at Vetri Speciali’s glass production facility in Spini di Gardo, Italy.
The 70-square-meter regenerative furnace is used to manufacture flint, amber, green, and dark green glass containers. It features a working end and four forehearths, engineered to ensure efficiency, durability, and consistent glass quality.
Sorg’s engineering services encompassed the planning of refractory materials and steel structures, including platforms for the furnace and glass conditioning areas, as well as detailed engineering for the furnace and feeding equipment. The construction of steel structures, installation of refractories, equipment setup, and commissioning were all carried out under the supervision of Nicolas Sorg.
Sorg stated: “We are proud to collaborate with Vetri Speciali on this significant expansion project. This new furnace combines proven Sorg technology with advanced control systems, aiming to achieve reliable, energy-efficient, and high-quality glass production.”
The scope of supply included a complete furnace setup: a combustion air supply system, gas and heavy oil heating systems, an electric boosting system, as well as measurement and control systems.
For the glass conditioning system, Sorg provided one batch charger, two 340 forehearths, and two 240 forehearths, all equipped with Sorg’s continuous emission technology.
The charger was supplied by EME. SKS was responsible for the delivery and installation of the full steel structure, including platforms throughout the plant. The company also completed refractory work spanning from the exhaust gas ducts to the gob drop point, covering the regenerators, furnace, working end, four forehearths, and glass spouts. Additionally, SKS handled the furnace insulation, applied spray insulation for the regenerators, and provided technical support during the furnace heat-up.
Beyond the physical and mechanical infrastructure, Sorg also delivered a dual-redundancy software control system equipped with the ES III expert system to optimize the performance of the furnace and forehearths.
Sorg extends sincere gratitude to Vetri Speciali for their trust and collaboration throughout the project and looks forward to the furnace embarking on a long and successful operational lifecycle.
